Epitransverse process: a rare outgrowth from atlas vertebra
نویسنده
چکیده
Acute injuries of the upper cervical spine as a cause of severe disability and death following trauma has at all times been an interesting phase of anatomical study [1]. The cranio-vertebral region has been considered an unstable, ontogenetically restless zone and thus susceptible to many variants, anomalies and malformations [2]. A number of authors have called attention to changes in the upper cervical spine as a common cause for headaches, neck pains and movements at the atlanto-occipital joint. The present case presents a rare outgrowth from the transverse process of atlas vertebra and discusses it’s the clinical significance to the surgeons and radiologists.

Anomalies of the craniovertebral junction – a very rare case report
A very rare case of anomalies of the craniovertebral junction (CVJ) is reported owing to its clinical significance and rarity. MRI and CT scan studies of the CVJ of a 52-year-old female patient revealed a hypoplastic clivus, an occipital vertebra, partial occipitalization of the atlas and atlas posterior rachischisis. The presence of an occipital vertebra and occipitalization of the atlas in th...

Atlas is the first cervical vertebra. It is ring shaped, without a body. It has an anterior arch, a posterior arch and two lateral masses. The lateral masses articulate with the occipital condyles to form ellipsoid type of synovial joints. The anterior arch articulates with the dens of the axis vertebra to form a pivot type of synovial joint. The posterior arch is grooved by the third part of t...

ALTHOUGH Paget's disease of bone commonly affects the vertebral column, it is rare for it to result in interference with spinal cord function. In an extensive search of the literature on the subject of spinal cord complications secondary to osteitis deformans, I have been unable to find any previously recorded instance of the disease affecting the atlas and axis vertebra and causing spinal cord...

It seems to be a principle in morphology that the greater the amount of specialization of function manifested by any organ, the farther does the structure so specialized depart from the form of the primordial type to which it belongs. This principle is particularly exemplified in the case of the two upper cervical vertebrae, the atlas and the axis, as, on account of the special varieties of mot...
متن کاملeosinophilic Granuloma of Atlas in a Child treated by Surgical resection and in Situ Fusion with 3 years of Follow-up: A Case report
Eosinophilic granuloma (EG), a rare disorder of clonal proliferation of Langerhans cells, is a benign osseous variant of Langerhans cell histiocytosis. It involves patients of all ages, but most commonly affects children (18). It is mostly seen in the skull, long bones, pelvis and spine. When eosinophilic granuloma affects the spine, it is most often seen in the thoracic, and then lumbar and ce...
